Honors Contract: Scrabble Triptych

NOTE: These pieces are still being developed and iterated as I attempt to streamline the process, so keep that in mind when my explanation is the most convoluted thing in the world.

The concept behind this piece was to explore the natural rhythm of language, driven by a recent interest in spoken word.
The improvisation in this piece takes place almost entirely through the game Scrabble. At the beginning of each performance, I would draw 7 scrabble tiles. The entire piece from that point on would be driven by the words I played. I chose scrabble because I thought it would be an interesting improv medium, and because it's something I have a decent level of skill at and am able to manipulate quickly and effectively.
The other central concept in this piece is the mapping of my voice to instruments. I used Ableton Live's gate to sidechain the volume of my voice to the volume of different instruments. I then compressed my voice so that instead of the track being variable volume, it was either sound on or sound off.
Each of the three pieces maps the words I made differently. With the first one I tried to focus more on the individual rhythm of a word, the second on repetition, and the third on phrases. The title of easch track consists of every word made in the scrabble game.
My main complaint with it at this stage is that I don't have a video feed of a scrabble board. I'm working on some ways of remedying that, and hopefully in the near future I'll be able to repeat this performance with a more engaging visual.
